Big Third Period Keeps Horde Undefeated

A shorthanded Northern Horde battled hard through the first two periods Wednesday night before breaking the game open in the third period. Tyler LaMont opened the scoring at 12:07 of the first period. The Diablos quickly answered to tie the game. Later in the first, Jeff Nelson scored two goals 33 seconds apart, with the second on an assist from Ryan Chester, to put the Horde up 3-1. Dmitry Tovb of the Diablos scored the only goal of the second period to make it a 3-2 game. Early in the third period, the Horde faced nearly 2 minutes of 5 on 3 hockey when Tyler LaMont was called for Interference, followed quickly by an Andrew Dayton roughing call in the Horde offensive zone (a stupid penalty, but the correct call). The Horde nearly killed the penalty, but Joe Gandsey was able to tie the game for the Diablos.
Following those penalties, the Horde offense came alive. Liza Messinger scored her first goal for the brick red at 12:19 of the third on a nice pass from Jeff Nelson. She followed that up with her second goal on an assists from Dan Bolles and Mark Paska. Dan Bolles would then twice feed Andrew Dayton for goals in the third period and Mark Paska slipped an unassisted goal past Diablos' keeper Steve Peterson. The 11 skaters for the Horde were exhausted come the end of the game, but their hard work paid off with another victory taking the Horde's record to 6-0 on the 8-3 win.
On Sunday night, the Horde enter the L5 AHA summer playoffs facing the Dung Beetles at Wakota (rink 1). The Horde expect to skate only 10 on the night as a number of players are either nursing injuries or unavailable. This should be a tough test . . .
